Season Launch guide for MNSH Team Managers

From our registrar - a guide for Managers:

Any player on the roster you were sent has registered with both USA Hockey and MN Hockey and is ready to take the ice. If a player tells you they have registered but are not on these rosters, make sure they have completed both steps (USA Hockey and MN Special Hockey) in the process.

NEXT STEPS FOR TEAM MANAGERS:

For your players

1) Make sure any player on the ice tomorrow is listed on the roster.
2) Collect and keep the following forms from each player.  The forms can be found at the MNSpecialHockey.org website http://www.mnspecialhockey.org/page/show/348704-forms.

  • Medical History Form
  • USA Hockey Consent to Treat/Medical History Form

For your coaches

1) Make sure any coach on the ice is listed on your roster.
2) Check with them to make sure they have completed the online MN Hockey Background Check form required of every adult over 18 working with the program https://minnesotahockey.ngin.com/register/form/133500041. They are not required to send me this information but will to let you know that it is done.

For your on-ice volunteers

1) If they are on the roster, they have registered with US Hockey and completed the waiver from as part of this process.
2) If they are over 18, make sure they also complete the MN Background Check Form online https://minnesotahockey.ngin.com/register/form/133500041. They are not required to send me this information but will to let you know that it is done.
3) You may have additional volunteers show up to help who may not be on the list.  They will need to complete a waiver form and the MN Background Check Form if they are over 18 before they can be on the ice.  If they are under 18, only the waiver form is required.

Below is the link to the MN Special Hockey's registration page and instructions for players, coaches and volunteers if needed:

Minnesota Special Hockey Skills Clinic Clinic Oct 19-21 CANCELED

The Minnesota Disabled Hockey High Performance Clinic/Festival is October 19-21, 2012 Blaine, MN has been canceled.

From Toni O'Brien:

Hi everyone.  I am very sad to send you this email to let you know our Minnesota festival weekend has been cancelled.

There are several reasons, but in the end we didn't feel we could give you the quality event your teams deserved.

Our goal is to create a coaches clinic prior to the end of the year and a festival in the early winter/spring of 2013.

Minnesota Hockey is committed to giving disabled hockey quality events, and for this reason we feel the need to postpone this event.

In the mean time, there are several grant opportunities available through mn and usa hockey. Please contact toni o'brien at tonio@dakcom.org.  I can complete any grant request that you may have.

Two sites for hockey videos and coaching / playing tips

These are two sites with good video material - free of charge

  • Hockey Video Tips: HowToHockey.com. I am probably going to buy his Complete Guide to Stickhandling but the videos and tips are free. Most of the material isn't for us, but the basic videos are excellent and brief.
  • Ice Hockey Tips | HockeyTutorial.com: The "Ice" in the page title is the clue -- this is a site in England (!). Videos are longish, but thorough. Comprehensive coverage.

Advice and Tips for the new season

Practices are starting for many teams, please check your team site for more information (ex: Eagles).

This is a good time to review the MN SH Advice and Tips page. Webmaster Jane has links to material from our old site, including an equipment fitting guide, a pre-practice/game checklist, and a wiki on coaching for special hockey. I've just added a link to some MN Hockey Skills videos to the coaching page.

See you on the ice!

Practice drill ideas from Special Olympics Floor Hockey

Special Olympics floor hockey has a superb web site of drills that can be adapted for use in Special Hockey.

The sports skills list includes
There's a PDF on the page that summarizes all the skills teaching. I'm going to add these links to our reference page and to the Wikipedia article on Special Hockey.
